Salamander Room by Anne Mazer is a story about a boy who finds a salamander outside and wants to keep him. When his mom asks him where, the boy goes into imaginative detail about where and how he can keep his salamander. Every question the mom comes up with he has a creative answer for and the illustrations in the story show just how creative and imaginative the boy is. To go with this story we talked about how we visual or make mental images when we read. We practiced this more by the students listening while I read some poems and they had to draw what they could see as I read. We also learned about and practiced common and proper nouns.

When I Was Young in the Mountains by Cynthia Rylant is a story told from the perspective of a Grandma sharing the stories of her childhood at her grandparent's house in the Appalachian Mountains. She tells about the swimming hole, the Johnny shed, tin bath tub, and how different things were. We use this book to talk about the setting of a story. We also talk about making connections: text-to-self (reminds you of something that happened to you), text-to-text (reminds you of something you read in another book), and text-to-world (reminds you of something that happened to someone else or you saw on tv or in a movie). Students also learn about the Appalachian Mountains through a Non-Fiction connecting text. We also work on reviewing what nouns are and learning about proper nouns.
